Spotlight: Forshock Design, E-Commerce Solutions for the High Desert

Mike Crabtree of Forshock Design in Victorville, CA

Mike of ForshockDesign supports local business!

When I was in 9th grade and got into trouble with my teachers, I got detention and extra homework. When Mike Crabtree of Forshock Design strayed outside the behavioral lines, his teachers made him… teach web design?

Yes, the talent behind Forshock Design started when teachers decided to channel his energy into more positive activities by teaching his peers about web design, moving on to building websites for teachers, local churches and others before he could even drive a car. And the skills he developed eventually led him to provide high quality websites for businesses throughout the High Desert and beyond. His specialty is e-commerce, creating or customizing shopping carts and other behind-the-scenes wizardry to help businesses like Bring It On! Paintball and Tiffany’s Hair Salon and Indian Hair reach customers around the world.

In addition to designing e-commerce websites, Mike also created software that somehow magically brings water up from the ground and into your house! (Please ask him to elaborate as how that all worked flew right over my head. All I know is that the water district out where I live uses it, so I’m glad it works!)

Though it may have seemed inevitable that he would build a career in computers, I asked Mike recently why he and his business are located here in the Victor Valley. Simply put, this has been his home, his family still lives here and he is building his life here. Mike moved to Apple Valley when he was 10 and has watched the housing boom over the last 17 years. Though he has watched tract after tract of new houses built, national chains blow into town and sees commuters drive down the hill every day, he and his family maintain small-town ties by shopping locally whenever possible. He gets treats from Ravin’s Donuts & Ice Cream, just around the corner from his house and his whole house is decked out in furniture and appliances from Midway Home Solutions.

“I do my best to buy local,” he explained. “Local businesses pay me!” Indeed, keeping the cycle of support going by patronizing local vendors whenever possible is one of the hallmarks of a healthy local economy. Over the years, Mike has observed many small businesses close their doors for one reason or another. In his opinion, local shops tend to be more customer-service driven because they are more connected to the community and they don’t deal in the volumes that big box stores do. “The personal relationship is still important,” he said.

And those personal connections are important in more than just business. One of his favorite local nonprofits is A Better Way Domestic Violence Shelter supporting families in crisis. Giving back and connecting with neighbors makes Victorville home, instead of just a bedroom community or pit stop on the way to Vegas. With small children, he also knows the value of freecycling. One of his favorites is Kid2Kid Clothing Exchange, where parents can swap clothing as their children outgrow what they have.

As we sat at The Grind in Apple Valley I reflected that this is why I am so passionate about supporting local businesses. The local hair salon hires the local web design guy who buys from the local furniture store who work with the local print shop folks that hang out at the local coffeehouse and around and around again. This may not be a small town where everyone knows everyone’s name but we’re all in this together!
